A beautifully drawn, honest coming-of-age memoir centered on the world of competitive skating. The drawings are fascinating and understatedly emotional. I read this fairly long graphic memoir in one sitting. Walden's social anxiety and coming out story are intensely relatable.

This author-artist is just 21, and I eagerly look forward to her future work.

chrome zoom issue

can anyone help me with a chrome browser issue? i followed online instructions regarding zoom but it is not applying my instructions. I also restarted the computer, and no dice.

I have Chrome zoom set to 125%, but when i load twitter and tweetdeck, it reverts to about 55% zoom. I have to adjust it with every page re-load. This doesn't seem to happen on random other websites, but I can't find anything within twitter that adjusts zoom.

ETA: went to tool bar, View --> actual size. This fixes the problem temporarily but does not save? I just had to do it again. This is just super annoying and frustrating!

[personal profile] xturtle linked to their friend Marcia, who is raising funds to help cover vet bills for her sick bunny; she is running out of unemployment benefits and looking for work; in the meantime Caspian needs testing to determine what the lump in his stomach is and get his teeth fixed. You can read more and help out here.

Anon linked to a fundriaser for [tumblr.com profile] ohcrakerjacks, a victim of black toxic mold. She and her parents are raising funds to replace walls, insulation, flooring, and furniture. Because I am me, I systematized my home search as much as I could – I have a spreadsheet in google that has not just my list of Best, Acceptable, and Totally Unacceptable buildings in it but also my mortgage calculator from the bank and various other financial stuff. I also went into the top few real estate websites (primarily Zillow and Estately) and set several different searches to be sent to my non-fandom inbox, where they were then filtered into a Housing folder (different from my other Housing folder, which has all my documents/communications with my realtor).

Now I’m looking at my Housing folder which constantly has new emails in it and wishing there was just an “I BOUGHT A HOME, YOUR SERVICES ARE NOW IN VAIN” button I could press to notify all of those sites that no, really, I seriously do not anymore need your Real Estate Tips And Tricks newsletter anymore.

Fortunately changing my address everywhere won’t be the nightmare my mum always complains it is, because I also have a spreadsheet of every website I’ve ever built a login for, and I just go through the spreadsheet (also it’s an excellent opportunity to delete my account from sites I never use).

I’ve rarely lived anywhere for more than five years, and my phone number was deeply unstable for a while for similar reasons, but it’s a small wonder our generation prefers email to most other forms of communication – after all, my gmail addresses have been stable now for more than ten years.

I believe I have now been Copperbadge On Social Media for longer than I have ever lived in any single residence.

questions written by [personal profile] jesse_the_k!

1) What is the first song you remember from your childhood?
We sang kid songs like "there's a hole the bottom of the sea"; "My Grandfather's Clock"; "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do"; "Kookaburra song". Probably some of these are just old popular songs? I've never thought to look them up.

2) What is the first music you purchased with your own money?
I don't remember, but in high school I had country albums by Alan Jackson, George Strait, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. In college I purchased a soundtrack to the show "Earth: Final Conflict" and was pretty excited when it came to my little dorm mailbox.

3) What's a piece of music that you know by heart?
Probably many country songs from my teenage years. We were all listening to Garth Brooks at that time (the 90s) and the lyrics were easy to memorize. I don't listen to country much anymore, but when I hear these songs somewhere I seem to know every word.

4) What's a song that makes you turn off the music right away?
Anything my John Mayer

5) And why?
He's a creep and his music is bad

The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo is a 5-episode you tube series about a group of friends living in LA. Some of them are aspiring actors. It is over-the-top, silly comedy with a whole lot of queerness and snappy dialog.

I used to be confused, as a child, about why you would buy a new calendar in September – a calendar that would contain September-December and then the entire next year. Because surely you had a calendar that went through the end of the year, no calendar ever ENDS in August.

But as an adult now I get it, because I keep a private calendar in google docs and I just had to move the October, November, and December tabs into the 2018 calendar since I’m already bookin’ shit out for January and February. At this point, starting in November I’m traveling at least once a month, every month, from November to June, except in May.

Clearly I better book a trip in May. :D

Dear Yuletide Author

norah: Monkey King in challenging pose (Default)
Thank you for offering to write for me! I am so excited.

I like happy endings, gen (at the moment, for these fandoms), humor, politics, friendship, robots & AIs, found family, and things written in third person. I dislike character death and grimdark. Not that I think it would come up with these fandoms but PLEASE NO child harm.

The Martian - Andy Weir. I would love something about Mark maybe solving a problem on Earth, after he's returned? I like anything about Mark Watney, TBH. I would also love something, anything about Rich Purnell - does he actually ever meet Mark? What did his NASA interview process look like? Rich solving another problem, maybe a practical life problem, would be super awesome.

Wayfarers Series - Becky Chambers. I would love ensemble fic, or anything that continues either book on past the ending (AU is fine, Nobody Dies is fine, character redemption is fine, politics is fine). I would love to hear what happens politically after the first book, but anything about the found families in either book would make me so happy. More about how Owl adjusts to her re-found family - and her years of isolation - would also be amazing.

Wonder Woman (2017). I would love Chief's Napi's story, or more of his perspective on the war. Please make as specific as possible to a single First Nation/tribal nation; feel free to use any of Eugene Brave Rock's character details that he talks about in interviews to fill out characterization or backstory. How did he become a smuggler? What is he doing in Europe, so far away from his tribe? What the fuck does he make of all these white people and their sudden interest in how bad war is now that it's happening to them? Or go full AU and make him Wonder Chief, from the isolated continent of the First Nations, come to straighten out a bunch of fucked up Europeans at the behest of the dashing Amelia Earhart, who has crashed in his territory, or Etta Candy, a Women's Airforce Service Pilot. Please please please lots of research to avoid cultural fail and/or find a cultural beta.

I'd love to receive a story in any of the fandoms listed, and if you are in doubt about a story idea you can ask [personal profile] thefourthvine what I would like. Please do know that I have a second and a sixth grader, and so first thing Christmas morning I will be caught up in a frenzy of "wheee presents" and family. I probably won't have time to read the story and give proper feedback until mid-day, for which I apologize.
